Wire Cloth

A Guide to Industrial Wire Cloth

Newark Wire Cloth is more than just a manufacturer of stainless wire cloth, we are the weaver. As ‘the source’, Newark offers a broad range of industrial wire cloth – Space Cloth, Mesh Cloth, and even Micronic Filter Cloth. Many items are considered ‘Stock’ and are ready for immediate shipment. Your choice of wire sizes may range from 1″ diameter down to wire sizes finer than human hair. Mesh opening sizes range from 4″ and larger down to one micron (.00003937 inch). With such wide variation, Newark Wire produces a variety of different weaves. The type of weave is frequently dictated by the wire diameter or the opening size desired, or by a combination of these factors, types and materials to suit virtually any requirement. Since stainless wire cloth is produced in such varying combinations of wire diameter and opening size, its use has been widely accepted throughout the industry. It is extremely versatile in application. Whether you’re sizing, separating, sifting, filtering or protecting, industrial wire cloth will do the job.

Wire Cloth is a woven product. The term Weave refers to the different types of interwoven warp and shute wire patterns found in the mesh.

Wire Cloth Specifications

Newark Wire Cloth stocks many standard industrial wire cloth specifications. Whether you’re looking for a Market Grade specification or an ASTM E-11 designation, we will have it on the shelf or we can source it through our extensive network of worldwide weavers. We offer a complete range of wire cloth: from coarse mesh having as much as a 4” opening (between the wires) to a 635 mesh which has a 20-micron opening.

We stock material conforming to many of the following specifications –

Most wire cloth specifications can be supplied in any material: 304 SS, 316 SS, Hastelloy, Titanium, Inconel, Silver, Aluminum, Nichrome and others.

Types of Weaves

Pre-Crimp: Typically found in coarser wire cloth or space cloth specifications. Here, the wires are crimped prior to weaving. The pre-crimp action enables both the warp and shute wires to nest securely with each other restricting their random movement and ensuring an accurate and consistent opening size. This weaving technique adds strength and rigidity to the wire cloth.

Lock Crimp: A refinement of the pre-crimp technique. The crimping of the warp and shute wires is done in such a manner to actually ‘lock’ the wires together at their point of intersection, offering further assurance of no wire movement.

Inter-Crimp or Multiple Crimp: Another enhancement of the basic pre-crimp weave. Both the warp and shute wires are crimped with extra crimps or corrugations between the points of intersection. This technique is usually required when weaving large openings with fine wires. Inter-crimping assures the proper locking of the warp and shute wires and adds rigidity and accuracy.

Plain Weave or Double Crimp: This is the most type of wire cloth. Here, the wires are not crimped before weaving. The corrugation or depression that is crimped into both the warp and shute wires is a result of the having a plain weave pattern calls for each shute wire to pass over and under successive rows of warp wires and vice versa, like interlacing fingers.

Twill: Wire Cloth in which each warp wire and each shute wire passes successively over and under the two adjacent wires — in both the warp and shute directions. This over and under movement is shifted one wire with each pass of the shuttle. This pattern permits the weaving of heavier wires in varying meshes.

Plain Dutch Weave: Similar interlacing as in Plain Weave, except the warp wires are larger diameter than the shute wires. The lighter shute wires are driven up close thus forming a dense filtering medium. This weave displays a tapered or wedge-shaped opening.

Twill Dutch: This filter cloth specification technically combines the Twill Weave and Dutch Weave described above. The larger diameter warp wires successively pass over and under the lighter diameter shute wires. Each pass of the shute wires shifts the over and under movement one wire. The shute wires are driven up close, resulting in a tightly woven filter cloth with tapered or wedge shaped openings.

Twill Dutch Double: Very similar to Twill Dutch Weave, but by proper selection of the wire sizes, the shute wires actually overlap each other when driven up tight into position. This permits double the wires per inch in the shute direction. This type of wire cloth is usually considered a Micronic Grade filter cloth.

Stranded: In this type of weave, both the warp and shute wires are made up of separate wires, rather than a single wire. This weave is woven in the twill pattern, producing an exceptionally strong and tight mesh.

Filter Cloth

PLAIN DUTCH WEAVE

Plain Dutch Weaves can handle high flow rates with relatively low pressure drop. They are woven with each warp and shute wire passing over-and-under one wire. The shute wires, however, are smaller in diameter than the warp wires and are driven close together to create a dense weave. This weave produces a strong filter cloth with good flow rates which makes it useable for high pressure filtration

TWILL DUTCH WEAVE

The finest wire cloth particle size retention is achieved in Twill Dutch Weaves. As the term Twill indicates, the warp and shute wires pass alternately over two and under two wires. The term Dutch refers to the use of a heavier warp wire diameter and a lighter shute wire diameter. There are two variations of this weave: Twill Dutch Double Weave and Twill Dutch Single Weave. The shute wires in a Twill Dutch Double Weave are positioned so close that there is always a shute wire above and below each warp wire. This creates a weave completely covering the warp wires. The resulting geometry of the flo-path is very tortuous, providing excellent particle size control. In a Twill Dutch Single Weave the shute wires are not as close together as in the Twill Dutch Double.

REVERSE PLAIN DUTCH WEAVE

The warp and shute wires are reversed from those in a Plain Dutch Weave and Twill Dutch Weave. The warp wires have a larger count and the shute wires count less, hence the warp wires are smaller in diameter than the shute wires. This weave type is very strong, has a high flow rate, and is exceptionally easy to clean or back-wash.

Welded Wire Cloth

Wire Cloth is produced as a woven or a welded specification. Welded mesh is only available in a relatively few specification as compared to the woven product. In the manufacturing process each individual wire intersection is resistance spot welded; no filler metal is added.

Welded is available in Stainless Steel and Galvanized material options. Common Welded specificatons are as follows

How to Check our Quality

Nowhere will you find a higher standard of quality in wire cloth or fabricated wire cloth parts than those manufactured by Newark Wire Cloth.

Our wire cloth inventory meets exacting specifications—whether it’s the ‘general’ U.S. government Wire Cloth spec., ASTM E2016 or the more precise U.S. Standard Sieve Cloth spec., ASTM E11 or even an AMS material certification—it’s no problem. Our people work with these as well as many other specifications every day. Not only does our raw material inventory meet specific quality levels, our quality assurance inspection team adheres to the guidelines set forth in ISO 9001 and AS 9100. We regularly comply with the quality demands of our customers—from aerospace, to pharmaceuticals, to automotive, to medical and food—everyone turns to Newark for quality and accuracy time-and-time again.

Whether your needs involve a corrosion resistant metal, delicate scientific accuracy or the cleanliness of a polished finish for the food industry—Newark’s manufacturing, assembly, welding and brazing techniques are all designed to meet your quality requirements.

Space Cloth: With a rule, check the distance from the inner edges of two adjacent, parallel wires.

Coarse Mesh Cloth: Use a rule to count the openings in one linear inch, starting at the center of any wire.

Medium Mesh Cloth: Beginning about 20 mesh, use a counting glass to count the openings per linear inch from wire center to center both horizontally and vertically ( or count openings in 1/4 inch slot and multiply by four).

Wire Diameter: Always check with a micrometer caliper. Measure both Warp and Shute. Use a magnifying glass to see if wires are parallel (both Warp and Shute). Check quality of crimping.

How To Order Wire Cloth

BE SURE TO SPECIFY

The Application – All service conditions should be known—environment, temperature, and other processing conditions often play a key role in material selection and usually influence the type of wire cloth needed.

Mesh Size, Space Cloth, Filter Cloth, Sieve Cloth or Other – What type of wire cloth? Be sure to specify the number of openings per inch, opening size or micron rating of the wire cloth you need. In addition, be sure to specify the wire diameter(s) you require. We also need to know the type of weave—Plain, Twill, Plain Dutch, Twill Dutch, etc.

Width and Length – Wire cloth is available in any width—36″, 40″, 48″ and even 60″ are considered standard. A standard roll of wire cloth is 100 feet long. Since wire cloth is a woven product, remember, roll length can vary by plus/minus 10%.

If these industry ‘standards’ don’t satisfy your needs, call us. We can custom weave, and, depending on equipment limitations, virtually any width and length is possible.

Metal – Please specify the type of material you require. We can weave wire cloth from any metal or alloy that can be drawn into wire.

Other – Many types of weaves available and the multitude of combinations possible demonstrate dearly that there is no limit to what you can expect from Newark Wire Cloth as a company.
