Newark Wire Cloth manufactures Test Sieves!  Precision test sieves providing consistent, repeatable, and reliable particle sizing results from 5” (125 mm) openings down to 0.0008” (20 micron) openings. Newark’s test sieves are manufactured in accordance with ASTM E11 and ISO 3310-1 specifications.

Newark Wire fabricates test sieves conforming to:

ASTM E11 Standard Specification for Woven Wire Test Sieve Cloth and Test Sieves.

The ASTM E11 specification specifies that test sieves shall be available in (3) different confidence levels.

Test sieves manufactured using sieve cloth that has been inspected after weaving and before being mounted in the sieve frame. The sieve cloth mounted in sieve frame will meet the requirements of ASTM E11 (Table 1) with respect to the number of openings measured per 100 s/f (Column 7) and not exceed the maximum allowable standard deviation (Column 8).

Types of Construction

Pure Tin Soldered

Pure Tin Soldered

Pure tin solder is used to secure the sieve cloth to the underside of the sieve frame. Evidence of pure tin solder is virtually absent from the interior surfaces of the sieve.

Most Pharmaceutical, Food, and Beverage applications permit the use of test sieves fabricated using pure tin solder.

Pure tin solder can be used for most ‘wet sieving’ and ‘dry sieving’ applications.

Pure tin solder should not be used when temperatures are greater than 350oF

Pure tin solder is not recommended for equipment exposed to caustic cleaning solutions or acid. Pure tin solder will break down over time. We recommend using a welded test sieve when these conditions exist.

UV Adhesive

UV Adhesive

UV Adhesive, a proprietary state-of-the-art polymeric adhesive is used to secure the sieve cloth to the underside of the sieve frame. It effectively seals the joint between the sieve cloth and the test sieve frame. Similar to the pure tin solder, it is virtually absent from the interior surfaces of the sieve.

The UV adhesive has been laboratory tested and certified to be in compliance with USP Biological Reactivity Tests in Vivo USP Plastics Class VI.

NOTE:  UV adhesive test sieves are not the best choice if you’re looking for laboratory test sieves for ‘wet sieving, or for applications with significant humidity or moisture; as the adhesive bond   between the sieve cloth and the test sieve frame can break down and become weak over time.

Welded Construction

A welded test sieve has the sieve cloth continuously resistance spot welded to the underside of the sieve frame.

The individual spot welds are overlapped, no voids thus ensuring that all product passes through the sieve screen, not around it. The sieve cloth is welded directly to the sieve frame, no filler metal. Whether a coarse mesh or fine mesh all can be supplied in a welded construction.

Welded test sieves can be used for most ‘wet sieving’ and dry sieving’ applications. They are ideal for pharmaceutical applications where caustic cleaning requirements exist.

Air Jet Test Sieves

Air Jet Test Sieve are the ideal solution for determining particle sizes for dry powders.  Air Jet Test Sieves have a worldwide reputation for accuracy, reliability, and repeatability.

Extra Deep or Wet Wash Test Sieves

Certain materials present a problem when sieving using traditional ‘dry sieving’ methods.  Some materials want to ‘stick together’ (static electricity, agglomeration, etc.).  For these materials, we recommend deeper sieves or wet wash sieves. These sieves are deeper than standard test sieves and they can be outfitted with drain holes in the lower half of the sieve frame (below the sieve cloth).

Starting in 2016 ASTM E11 was revised so that it is more closely aligned with ISO 3310.  Column 2b was added to Table 1 of ASTM E11; this column, “Supplementary Sizes” includes all the metric sizes as taken from ISO 3310.  This significant change aligns both standards with respect to aperture sizes and permitted tolerances.

 

  • ASTM E11 and ISO 3310 both use standard deviation to evaluate the measurements
  • ASTM E11 and ISO 3310 both specify the same opening sizes
  • ASTM E11 and ISO 3310 both utilize a ‘K’ factor; ISO 3310 does so directly, ASTM E11 does so indirectly
  • ASTM E11 and ISO 3310 both differentiate between inspection and calibration grade test sieves. NOTE:  Calibration grade test sieves require at least twice as many apertures measured as compared to an inspection grade test sieve.
  • The reported aperture measurements are more accurate. Using digital imagery and image analysis software linked to custom statistical software is your assurance that your test sieve measures up.
  • Test Sieves can be inspected and certified or re-certified to either ASTM E11 or ISO 3310.
  • Each test sieve is identified with a serial number and supplied with N I S T traceable documentation.
  • Each Test Sieve is supplied with a Certificate of Compliance
