What is a conical strainer?
Conical Line Strainersย (Temporary Line Strainers, Witches Hat or Top Hat)
Usually, a temporary device used to separate or remove oversize solids from a liquid or gas pipeline.ย Separation is done using either perforated, wire mesh, or a combination of the two.ย Catches most nuts, bolts and other construction debris upon start-up of system.
Conical line strainers are commonly used in various industries such as petrochemical, chemical processing, water treatment, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals, where the presence of solid contaminants can degrade product quality, damage equipment, or interfere with processes. They are available in different materials, sizes, and configurations to suit specific application requirements.

Standard Temporary Conical Line Strainers
Standard Temporary Conical Line Strainers are available in Perforated or Mesh or Wedge Wire or in combination to support plant startup. Units designed to fit 150 and 300 lb. flanges and are available with or without bolt holes to suit customer configuration.

Conical Line Strainers?
When ordering any of our strainer products please consider the following…
- Product type – Do you need a housing, overscreen, perforated core, etc.
- Strainer Housing Specs – If ordering a side inlet or inline strainer, what is the line size you are looking for? We offer the following line sizes: 1.0″, 1.5″, 2.0″, 2.5″, 3.0″. In addition to the line size we will need to know if you’d like a short (15.75″) or a long (35.38″)
- Perforated Core Specs – If you need a perforated core, what diameter should it be? Do you need 1/8″ diameter holes or 1/4″ holes? What line size does it need to fit in?
- Overscreen specs – If ordering an overscreen, please let us know the following. The diameter of the overscreen, the height, mesh count, and micron opening.
