Glossary Part 1

When deciding on the proper filtration system for your operation, it can be difficult to navigate the vast amount of materials and types of strainers. This glossary will break down some of the most common terms used in the wire filtration industry.

Conical Line Strainers

These strainers have a large filtration area, allowing you to catch more debris. Frequently used to protect pipelines, conical line strainers use woven wire mesh or perforated wire mesh to strain out contaminants. Newly welded products often create slag or debris that can damage sensitive systems. Conical line strainers can catch these bits and small metal pieces before they can harm. Install these strainers either upstream or downstream and leverage the wide-to-narrow construction to increase the filtration area.

Conical Line Strainers

Basket Strainers

Basket strainers are a broad variety of devices used to remove particles and debris from a piping system. It includes openings that allow fluids to flow through or over a device while retaining the particulates needing to be washed away. Basket strainers have utility in many industries, including military, pharmaceutical, food, chemical, medical, environmental, utility and power organizations. They’re designed for high-flow processes and can be made to strainer openings as small as 5 microns. Available in perforated wire, wire cloth or wedge wire, the strainer and can be fully automated. Simplex basket strainers can generally be installed anywhere on a line but need to be changed and cleaned. Duplex basket strainers are designed for no-interruption workflows, with switch controls that allow one strainer to be taken offline for cleaning while continuing processes. Y strainers are common in many industries with shape and function that can be installed horizontally or vertically and are ideal for steam traps, control valves, meters, control valves and regulators.

Flat Plate Strainers

These strainers are simply designed devices with mesh perpendicularly stretched across a metal plate. Typically, they are used like conical line strainers as temporary tools during start-up operations. Flat plate strainers are usually installed inside the fluid flow line but can also be held for manual filtering. Newark Wire flat plate strainers are made from perforated metal, wire cloth or a combination and can be ordered with pre-drilled bolt holes or left solid. The strainers are ideal for tight spaces and require much less space than other types. However, they offer reduced straining areas and can be more difficult to monitor or remove.

Stainless Steel Industrial Wire Mesh

Stainless steel wire mesh is an ideal choice for industrial filters and strainers. Wire mesh is a welded product of perpendicular wires of different sizes to create a uniform product that’s both durable and flexible, making it usable in many applications. When choosing wire mesh, customers can opt for different weave types and weld crimps. There are also many options for the per-inch mesh count, wire diameter, opening width, micron size and percentage of open area. The great flexibility in type and design allows you to choose the right stainless steel industrial wire mesh to meet your production needs.

Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Baskets

Wire mesh baskets are highly customizable and have applications in industries ranging from food and beverage to pharmaceuticals. They can be made in any size and shape configuration with coarse or fine mesh openings, making them ideal for different straining functions. They are typically made of stainless steel or nickel but can be made of other alloys as necessary. If your processes require rods, handles or counterweights, we can manufacture mesh baskets to your specifications.

Test Sieves

When precision is critical, test sieves are the industry choice.. In automobiles, aerospace and pharmaceuticals, test sieves are used to evaluate chemicals, powders, oils and other products, testing for contaminants, defects and byproducts. They’re designed for sanitary uses with a durable and polished steel frame and are numbered and die-stamped with product specs.
