Proper Sieve Testing

How do you get a sieve that will work properly with the granular materials you are using? There is something called sieve analysis (also sometimes referred to as a gradation test), and this allows you to assess the gradation of materials in a sieve. It is important to do this testing, so that your sieve works to full capacity. For the test, you must get granular materials to test. This includes sand, grains, seeds, coal, soil, different powders, crushed rock, and even feldspar. In essence, this test/analysis can be done on most organic and non-organic granular materials.

In order to do this test, multiple sieves must be gathered. The same amount of materials is placed on each of the sieves. The sieves are then placed on a mechanical shaker. After the shaking is done, the sieves are weighed to measure how much materials fell through. The total weights are divided against the original and a percentage can be found. There should be some materials left on top of the sieve. The size of the particle cans me measured to get a cut-off point (size in which materials won't go through sieve).This test helps people gauge different sieves and their properties. Size of sieves ranges from large to small. Testing is done to properly classify these machines, so that those working with them, such as civil engineers, get the job done right the first time.

Different types of sieves will have different capacities and ratings.

A woven wire mesh sieve normally has an aperture that ranges from roughly 20 micrometers to about 3.6 millimeters. The diameter ranges from 100 to 450 millimeters.

Perforated plate sieves are in the range from 1 millimeter to 125 millimeters, and they have a diameter of 200 to 450 millimeters

The American standard sieve, which is sometimes called ASTM, has the smallest of diameters. It only ranges from 8 to 12 inches. The aperture is 20 micrometers to 200 millimeters.

Sieve testing has been used for several decades now, but it does have its limitations. When working with materials that are smaller than 100 mesh, using a dry sieve test can be less accurate. Sieves also don't work as well when the granulated materials aren't rounded. When working with elongated materials, you need to take special care when working with sieves.
